2025 Jazz Camp Audition Requirements

 

Auditions are for new students who have not attended Jazz Camp before.

All auditions should be submitted in video format. Please use a computer, phone, tablet, or camera to record. The purpose of this audition submission is to ensure that the student has the appropriate skill level to be successful at camp and for placement in study groups.

Returning campers do not need to submit a video but are welcome to do so.

Please submit your videos as soon as possible and no later than April 1, 2025. Please email them to Jazz Camp Director Glendon Ingalls at glendoningalls at gmail.com


Please submit one video with the following the details.

 

Video Details

Wind players (the posted music is for C, Bb, Eb, and Bass Clef instruments.  If you need a part for an instrument in another key i.e. F horn, please contact the Camp Director who will provide you with a notated line.

  • On your video, please state your first and last name clearly.

  • Play a concert Bb chromatic scale of at least one octave.  If you would like to play from your lowest to highest note you are comfortable playing that is even better.

  •  Using the Bb blues backing track and chart (see below), play the melody (the head), improvise for 2 choruses (24 measures), and then play the melody again.  The concert Bb blues at the bottom of the page gives you some note choices to work with if you need suggestions.

 Piano players

  • On your video, please state your first and last name clearly.

  • Play a concert Bb chromatic scale of at least one octave in both hands.  If you would like to play from your lowest to highest note you are comfortable playing that is even better.

  • Using the Bb blues backing track and chart (see below), play the melody (the head),  play one chorus of accompanying chords,  improvise for 2 choruses (24 measures)soloing in the right hand and comping chords in left hand if possible, and then play the melody again.  The concert Bb blues at the bottom of the page gives you some note choices to work with if you need suggestions.

 Guitar players

  • On your video, please state your first and last name clearly.

  • Play a concert Bb chromatic scale of at least one octave.  If you would like to play from your lowest to highest note you are comfortable playing that is even better.

Bass players

  • Play a concert Bb chromatic scale of at least one octave.  If you would like to play from your lowest to highest note you are comfortable playing that is even better.

  • Using the Bb blues backing track and chart (see below), play the melody (the head), play one chorus of accompanying bass line, improvise for 2 choruses (24 measures), and then play the melody again.  The concert Bb blues at the bottom of the page gives you some note choices to work with if you need suggestions.  If you need a written-out bass line please contact the camp director who will provide you with a notated line.

Drummers

  • On your video, please state your first and last name clearly.

  • Play 16 measures in each of the following styles: Swing, Rock-Funk, Latin (Bossa Nova, or Samba), Jazz Waltz (3/4) Time

  •  Using the Bb blues backing track and chart (see below), play the rhythm of the melody (the head), play one chorus (12 measures) of accompanying shuffle style drumming, and then play the melody again.
